Student Led Comments, Fall 2008
As you know, a part of High Tech High’s philosophy includes providing personalized comments for each student at the end of the year. In order to engage you in reflecting about your experiences this year, we are asking you to write your own comments first, to which Anne and Paul will respond with their own thoughts and observations. The comments you write will be posted on PowerSchool alongside the comments Anne and Paul write for you.
DUE Wednesday 12/17/08.
Name:
• Successes, challenges and areas that need improvement
• Personal growth in each subject area (math, chemistry, language arts, history)
• Academic goals for next semester. What will you do to achieve those goals?
Remember that this is a place for reflection on your own successes and challenges this semester, not a critique of whether you liked your classes. Please email this to Anne by Wednesday.

• Successes, challenges and areas that need improvement?
I think a challenge that I have always had is paying attentions and not talking. Though it is something I have always been working on, I have not been trying hard enough and it is starting to affect me. I am going to really push myself this semester. I think coffee has a delayed reaction on me. I drink it in the morning when I am tired but I do not have energy until after lunch and then I have to much of it. I am going to stop drinking coffee and see if that helps. I also am going to be extra careful about talking to people in class.
• Personal growth in each subject area (math, chemistry, language arts, history)
I understand now how to properly do a lab. For math I feel like I have learned a new way to view problems. In language arts I have been reading faster which allows me to read more. I also have noticed that my spelling and printing is very very messy. I think that by taking notice that will help me fix it. Lastly for history I believe that I have seen more of a point to history. I have always liked it but never really realized there was a lesson in so much of it.
• Academic goals for next semester. What will you do to achieve those goals?
My academic goals are, I want to finish all my classes with at least and A-. I think this is an extremely realistic goal. The reason I did not have such a good grade this year is because I was taught last year to not care about my grade. Thought I do agree with part of that, grades are what matter for college. This semester i will do everything I can to make sure I get full credit for everything and check my work to make sure it was graded correctly and talk to my teachers if I feel something was graded incorrectly or do not understand something.

My challenges:
• One of the challenges that I had this semester was when we as a class started reading Don Quixote, I am a very picky person when it comes to picking which books ill read and I don’t really like reading books that people select for me. So when we started reading Don Quixote I realized that it wasn’t generally a book that I would choose for myself to read because of the difficultness in the text and because of the length of the book.
• When we first started reading hamlet I didn’t understand the text and could not follow along with the rest of the class. Hamlet was such a challenge for me because the dialogue was written in old English, and I had never read a book or play that was written in old English.
My weaknesses:
• One of my weaknesses I think would be that this is my first year at High Tech High so I had to adapt quickly and had no idea how to work with things like my digital portfolio and
• Another one of my weaknesses would be that last year I didn’t have to write essays that were so long like are position paper for are project A Modern Proposal had to be 950 words that was the first time I had ever written an essay so long.
My strengths:
• One of my strengths that I think I had was that I was willing to ask for help and I was willing to work harder to receive a better grade.
• Another one of my strengths was that I always for the most part did all my work for all of my classes and kept my grades up for all my classes, I was never at any point failing any class.
Academic goals:
• One of my academic goals would be to try to get straight A’s for next semester because this semester by grades stayed at all B’s so I want to better and challenge my self.
• Another academic goal that I have for my self next year is to try and read at least one book on the books that Paul and Anne recommended for this year to read.
Personal growth:
• Humanities:
My personal growth in humanities was that I was able to expand my reading and read books that I would not personally read like Animal Farm, Hamlet, and Don Quixote. I was personally proud of my grade that I received on my Don Quixote essay because it showed be that although the book was a challenge for me, I can over come that.
• Chemistry/ math2:
My personal growth in chemistry class this year was a lot because everything that I know about chemistry now I learned this year. My growth in math class was a lot too because I learned to use excel and find percents also, I am extremely proud of my statistics report.
I sent this comment on Wednesday but it isn't sending for some reason so I have to put it on the blogger.
• Successes, challenges and areas that need improvement
I have definitely improved my grades and I'm happy that I am passing my classes. But I need to study more for math and also I need to improve my time management. My biggest issue in humanities though is writing essays. I always get writer's block and it takes me a while to write an essay. I always end up leaving some things like essays to the last minute. Those are basically my top three things I need to improve on: time management, essays, and studying.
• Personal growth in each subject area (math, chemistry, language arts, history)
In humanities, I have grown to like older books like Hamlet, but I had troubles with Don Quixote. With math I have learned to like it, because last year I didn't like it as much and I wasn't very good at it. Also, in chemistry I haven't improved, but I've kept my grades up and that is my favorite class right now.
• Academic goals for next semester. What will you do to achieve those goals?
I achieved one of my goals so far, which is to pass all my classes in the first semester, but next summer I want to improve and raise my grades. Also I need to study math more and not leave things to the last minute.
